Me with one of my creations!

I think its important that, as druids, we work to build sacred spaces within the landscape. Yes, many would say that all land is sacred, and I’ll not disagree. But at the same time, there’s a difference between a parking lot or a strip land between two segments or highway and a quiet fore

st glade or a stone circle set upon a hillside overlooking a river. Whether in your own home garden, in a corner of a local park, or in the forest behind your workplace, you can build and maintain small sacred spaces that can provide peace, restorative energy to you and the land, demonstrate reverence and respect. In my own property and in other wild places I visit, I’ve been working to build small natural sacred spaces and wanted to share my experiences and insight.

This post is meant to be the first in a series; I will detail other building techniques in the next few months. Some of these will include a set of smaller projects that you can undertake in as little as 10 minutes or larger projects which may take days, weeks, months, or years to complete.

Stone Cairns / Stone Balancing / Stone Stacking

The first “Sacred Space” building technique that you can use is building stone cairns, also known as stone stacking, stone building, or stone balancing.

The art of balancing stones has origins in many cultures. In many parts of Asia, stones are balanced and stacked as a sign of prayer and meditation. In North America, native Americans used stone cairns to watch over animals while humans were not present. I see stone balancing as a kind of natural poetry–an aesthetic that is difficult to put into words. When we balance stones, we connect the depths of our souls to the depths of the earth and create something of beauty and harmony. What do the stacked stones convey? Ask them, and you may find out.

“Thor’s Gate” Style Cairn, complete with spiral drawn in clay

Stone balancing is a very simple, yet profound activity. Stone balancing allows you, at its core, to connect with the ancient energies of the earth. You might begin stone balancing by simply seeing how stone A stacks upon stone B and stone B stacks upon stone C. Try these kinds of stacks for a while, and once you get the hang of simple stacking, you might want to try more complex stone stacking, where stone C depends upon both A and B, or where B and C need each other to sit atop A.

When I started stone balancing, I made stone stacks very simply with the larger, round stones found so commonly in South East Michigan. I have several active stone stacks in my yard which I maintain–these simple stacks would fall over each time the weather changed by more than 20 or 30 degrees. But over time, I started adding complexity to my stone stacked designs–small pebbles between the larger stones to create a more solid structure that can withstand the changing seasons, wind and rain. I also began experimenting with different kinds of stacks and designs, such as the design I’ll call “thor’s gate” and the “Yggdrasil” designs in the photos. When I went to Western PA, I found that the rocks there were much more conducive to stone building–nice, flat rocks allowed me to stack in many different patterns. Let the shape of the stones determine how you work with them–they will speak to you and the stone building will just flow.

Yggdrasil-style Cairn on stump with light shining through

I have found stone balancing to be a wonderful activity for both my own property and for visiting natural areas and leaving a tribute. In my own property, I build them in different parts of the property as shrines. For example, a stone cairn I maintain every day is my “Shrine to the fallen” which sits on top of a white pine tree stump from a tree that was cut before we moved here. In addition to the stones, I add symbols of rebirth and renewal such as pine cones, evergreen boughs, etc. A second stone cairn is a set of numerous stone stacks near a large oak and series of smaller sassafras trees, which I also maintain daily as a “Reverence to the Land” shrine. This shrine is where I might leave some seeds or pumpkin cakes as a “thank you” to the earth which provides all.

A second activity involves building stone cairns on public land: state parks, local township parks, along city walking paths, etc. Make sure you aren’t disrupting local wildlife with your stone building. I have some stone cairns that I return to often or once a year, and some that I build and never come back to again. Sometimes, if you build an impressive enough and visible enough cairn, others may add to your stone cairn, creating a kind of shared poetry.

I have found great joy in building stone cairns in streams or along riverbeds. Recognize that spring rains and swollen rivers will eventually wash your cairns away; however, there is something inherently magical in seeing a stone cairn sitting in the middle of a tranquil brook.

Stones as Shared Poetry

The Stone Cairn in the Stream

This was a small stone cairn I built while with a group of three other women. While none of them were druids like myself, all were spiritually aware and respectful of the land. When I finished building the cairn, I asked each of them how the stone cairn spoke to them; if they had happened upon it in the forest, what would it say to them? Here are their responses:

If I had come upon this stone cairn, I would have thought that it rose up from the earth on its own. The earth had built it just to communicate with me.

I go hiking often, and many trails have these as markers. So I see this cairn as something that helps guide you along your way.

I see it as a place for the energies of the forest to converge. A focus point. I also see it where the water and the earth meet.

My own intention was that the cairn was built to revere the land and out of respect. But the beauty of the stone cairn is that it allows for many kinds of interpretation.

I hope that you will be inspired to post your own stone cairns! And if so, please post in the comments and share some of your work and experiences.

Just heard that an earthquake struck in northern Italy last night – its epicentre east of Milan in Modena. Let’s now hope there will be no after-shocks. Here are some photographs of the Tarot Garden:

Quickie recap of NATO and a thank you to service members for Armed Forces Day. "Be awesome to each other"

Good morning everyone, and Happy Saturday once again! I have a lot to rewrite here this week, as the Interwebz Gods saw fit to drop the post I had just constructed. Grrr! As you know, we live here in Chicago, with the skyline in clear view of our apartment, and it seems everyone’s paying attention to what’s going on around here thanks to the NATO summit. (Some of them are actually going to be pretty close to me, since we live not too far from Rahm’s house. Traffic should be interesting.) What’s interesting is many people, when asked on the street, have no idea what the NATO summit is even about, so before I move forward, I figured it’s a good a time as any to post a link on what it’s all about. Yep, there we go.

I was actually supposed to take my state exam today, and I was all prepared to wear my Pete Griffara shirt and go incognito as advised, but the testing people called me Thursday and rescheduled it due to the building getting shut down. Damnit! I just wanted to get this thing over with and get my sponsor card! But, they rescheduled me to next Thursday, which isn’t even a regular day for it, which is fine by me – I’d rather have my Saturdays for showings!

And, I really hope this whole thing fizzles itself out, because I, and many, many others, do not want to see a repeat of the ’68 Convention. But police aren’t so sure, especially since today is supposed to be a hot one, and when it heats up around here, shit happens. Let’s just hope it’s a fairly peaceful protest like it was yesterday. And I say fairly, since some traders were hit with water balloons filled with urine and bags of human feces (it’s in various twitter feeds as well). Yes, some of those guys are indeed assholes, but that doesn’t sound much like peacefully protesting if you ask me.

One of the protests I wanted to make mention is taking place tomorrow, where post-9/11 vets will be returning their medals. Some, especially vets from previous wars, find the act to be disgraceful, but folks like me who have no skin in the game figure it’s their medals, and they can do with them what they want. I find this part of the overall schedule of protests, and the NATO summit as a whole, to have an interesting timing, because Congress just voted to approve continuing the war in Afghanistan. I’d like to know how YOU all feel about things going on here. Please feel free to share your comments!

And of course, before I neglect to mention, I want to once again express my thanks and gratitude to you all for your service and sacrifice. With today being Armed Forces Day, we thank those who serve and protect us now. And on Memorial Day, we thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service. As we all know, there are indeed many Pagans of different beliefs who are serving, and I extend many blessings of safety and comfort for you. There will be Warrior Blessings held at various Pagan festivals this summer, at Lothlorien and Pagan Spirit Gathering to name two, and I hope if you are unable to attend personally, you will feel the blessings reach you. (And hey, if any of you readers are attending PSG, I’ll be there the final weekend. I’d love to meet you! My workshop is playing with my puppet and the kids!)

Well, I do need to get moving, as I have a busy day of showings ahead of me. Please everyone, whichever side of the fence you’re on, be it as a protester or as a service member, or even as someone who just needs to get to work downtown, be safe and care for one another. Blessings to you and yours.

There are lots of articles and essays of interest to modern Pagans out there, sometimes more than I can write about in-depth in any given week. Local Pagans affiliated with Circle Sanctuary, and the Northern Illinois University Pagan student group, worked and communicated with the DeKalb County Board to ensure a permit would be in place this year. PSG’s move to Illinois came after their last location, Camp Zoe in Missouri, was seized due to (completely unrelated to PSG) drug trafficking charges.

There are a number of great Pagan articles and essays currently up, here at the Patheos Pagan channel, including a column on making Paganism competitive, another on doing religion on the road, and a third on how a Microsoft CD-Rom led the author to Paganism.

In the long-simmering battle over the inclusion of (largely Christian) prayers at the beginning of government meetings, an assumption held sway that a written policy of pluralistic inclusion would provide a fig-leaf of legal protection against lawsuits from organizations like Americans United or the ACLU. At least that was the assertion of the conservative Christian advocacy organization Alliance Defense Fund (ADF). In their “model public invocations policy,” the ADF noted how important it was to have an inclusive “neutral” policy on paper, if not in actual practice.

“The bottom line is that any policy adopted and implemented [...] must ensure that the invocation opportunity is not exploited to proselytize any particular faith or disparage any others, or show any preference of the Council for a specific faith or religious denomination. It is our belief that the Policy we have carefully drafted meets these criteria and would pass court muster if challenged. [...] No invocations policy has a chance to be upheld by a reviewing court today unless it offers equal opportunity to at least the broad array of monotheistic faiths and denominations with a presence in that particular geographic area. One conclusion from the case law is clear: if a public body allows any prayers, it is required to allow for most all prayers, without unlawful discrimination against any.”

The document goes on to assert that no “extraordinary efforts to include particular minority faiths” were necessary, and “no apology is necessary for the demographics of the community that the public body serves.” In other words, in their opinion, a predominately Christian town doesn’t have go out of its way to include Wiccans, Hindus, or Buddhists. This policy blueprint was partially constructed around two 4th Circuit cases involving public prayers and modern Pagans: Simpson v. Chesterfield County, the case that helped create the so-called “Wiccan-proof” invocation policy, and the Darla Wynne case, in which a Wiccan from South Carolina won a battle against sectarian government prayer. Then a setback for sectarian prayers to Jesus emerged in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, who ruled that simply saying you’re inclusive while showcasing predominantly sectarian Christian prayer is not acceptable.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today ruled 2-1 that the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners’ preference for Christian prayers violates the constitutional separation of church and state. If this decision holds, as the 4th Circuit’s did, it could help establish a new standard for government prayer, one that demands strong pluralism if a body is going to allow sectarian invocations. It remains to be seen how long the Supreme Court will punt on this issue by denying judicial review. Eventually, they will have to make a stand on these policies, just as it recently took a stand on the question of “ministerial exception.” However, for now, Pagans and other members of minority religions have a new precedent to use in demanding equal treatment in regards to public prayer. No doubt several towns and cities who fall under the jurisdiction of the 2nd and 4th Circuit Courts are currently talking with their lawyers over their prayer policies, and whether they need to include far more Wiccans (and Buddhists, Hindus, Musilms, Jews, etc) than previously imagined.

Both, I think, give a good picture of how Asatru in Iceland compares with groups in the United States and other countries.

“The gods had to come back. You can see how the gods are coming in the 19th century. We had some years of rationalism – the Industrial Revolution, people losing their ties with nature and repressing religion and focusing on science and knowledge. You had the president of the French scientific academy proclaiming that we’ve more or less found out everything that there is to be found out – we only need to polish some theories. In an atmosphere like this, the gods need to come back, because they’ve been repressing them so long.
Hey there all -

So I haven't forgotten about this blog. In fact, it's always in the back of my mind. I've just been busy with other projects that I'll definitely share when they're ready. I've been dealing with my thyroid issues along with finding out I have lots of other "low levels," so I'm on a bunch of supplements. I'm trying to get back to "working" condition, but I won't lie, my energy levels aren't even close to normal.

On the plus side, I fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans and some of my rings are fitting the way they used to before I was pregnant. It's nice to see the results of the work I have been able to do. At least I know the meds helped get that jump started.

I have plenty of ideas for blogs, so stay tuned. When I have the energy to focus on more than one project, I'll be back with the next installment of "My Mommy The Pagan Warrior."
